What kind of flute do you think this is?

I’ve been looking for a new instrument to pick up. I’m thinking about either violin or some kind of flute. I really like the way this one sounds, but I’m not sure what kind of flute it is. It doesn’t sound like the metal flutes that are used in high school bands, so could it be a wood flute? Or is it just a little pennywhistle or something like that? I’m not familiar with wind instruments…I just play guitar, piano, and bongos. : /

This is a link to hear the flute I’m talking about. I found the song when I was looking through sheet music and I was curios. I’m not a Naruto fan, but I like the instrumental part on this song. :)

The flute starts after a few measures of piano…just wait for it.

That sounds like a shakuhachi. A traditional Japanese flute made from bamboo. It’s a very difficult instrument to play. It has only five or six notes, on a pentatonic scale (in other words, you can’t play all 8 notes in our ‘western’ scale) and each note it plays can be ‘bent’ either up or down. Mastering the shakuhachi can takes years & years.

But there are a lot of simpler flutes. There’s a native American flute, sometimes called a ’spirit flute’ that is much easier to play, though it too can’t play all 8 notes.

You could also learn the pennywhistle (Irish and Celtic music) or the recorder. I play the recorder myself. Most of the music for it is 200 years old (it was considered obsolete after 1750!) but it gained popularity in the 20th century and new stuff is being written for it. It’s very easy to play but not so easy to play really well. And it comes in different sizes, depending on how long your fingers are and how wide you can spread them. 8^)

Check out ’shakuhachi’, ‘recorder’, and ‘pennywhistle’ on YouTube. There are plenty of examples of all of them.
