SHEET MUSIC APPLICATION
Is it possible to become a very good guitarist within a year?

I’m 16, and I’ve been playing guitar for about 8 years by ear (self taught), and I’m just starting to apply sheet music to my practices. I took lessons for about 2 months, but it was too expensive after that. I want to apply to music schools for college, do you think it would be possible to be able to play at a higher level (playing music at about the level of Prelude from Bach´s Cello Suite No. 1 )
thanks for your input! To add to my audition for a music based college, I also sing, and I was invited to area all state this year as an alto 2 (although my range is from an alto 2 to soprano 1, and i’m ‘considered’ an alto), which I’m assuming will look very good on an application

(as far as my personal ‘level’, i can pretty much figure anything out by ear, and i can play just about any chord you can throw at me, as long as you say the name (ex. play a F#m chord) and not show me the sheet music.)

Mamianka is correct. Before you try to audition for a music school you should have had private lessons for at least a couple of years and have studied music at the local community college level. Your local community college is an excellent resource for the up and coming musician. It is much less expensive than a fancy music college and can give you a great musical education.
If your goal is to be a classical guitarist, than you MUST study with a good classical guitar teacher. Many colleges offer a very good classical guitar program. You need to learn as much as possible about harmony and theory as well as musicianship and music history.
Your ability to figure out simple chords is admirable but no where near enough to get you into a good music school (F#m is a very simple chord, you should be able to play it in at least 3 different positions across the neck) You need to understand how chords are made (tertiary harmony) and all of the various extensions and alterations. (stuff like F#m7b5, D9#13, Gmaj11, a common jazz progression) You need to have a firm grasp on scales and their usage as well as modes, arpeggios, etc.

You are only 16. Concentrate on finishing high school with the best grades possible. Spend the next couple of years studying with a good local instructor. When you graduate, spend a couple of years at least in your local community college studying music and general ed stuff. By doing this you may be ready for a good music school by the time you are 19-20.

I am not trying to be mean, just realistic. You have a strong desire which is great! But you must temper that desire with patience and setting realistic goals to achieve in a given time frame.
I wish you good luck!
