SHEET MUSIC WEDDING MARCH

The Beatles, Romance and Penny Stocks

Because my grades in high school science were so abysmal, my parents were robbed of the chance of adhering a “Proud parents of an honor roll student” sticker to the bumper of the car.

While I have come to love watching science shows on Nova, I also admit there is a part of me that gets sucked into watching specials that cling to, what some may call, flakey science.

This past week I learned plenty about what September 9, 2009 (09-09-09) means to astrologists, numerologists and Beatles fans. For cultures in which the number nine is lucky, Sept. 9 is anticipated — while others might see the date as an ominous warning.

Modern numerologists — who operate outside the realm of the generally accepted scientific method – see the number 9 as the number of life. It can be seen as both a signifier of endings and beginnings. But more important, it’s the number of humanity, of coming together and helping one’s fellow man.

Both the Chinese and Japanese cultures have strong feelings about the number nine. Those feelings just happen to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. For Chinese, the number 9 is associated with long life; due in large part to the fact that in Chinese it sounds similar to the word for ‘long-lasting’.

In Japanese, the word for nine is a homophone for the word for suffering, so the number is considered highly unlucky — second only to four, which sounds like death.

Were you hoping for romance or looking to get married on 09-09-09? “Don’t do it,” said one numerologist. “Never get married under the number nine!” He noted that 82% of his divorced clients who come to him for numerological advice were married on a date that included the number nine.

Unfortunately, not everyone is privy to that statistic. More than 4,000 couples in Tianjin, China, set September 9 as their wedding date. We’ll chalk it up to cultural differences.

If you’re a Beatles fan, then 09-09-09 was your day of reckoning with the digitally remastered release of their musical cannon. Some have speculated that releasing the Beatles material on 09-09-09 is a nod to the group’s song “Revolution 9,” in which “number nine” is repeated in the background.

But what about Wall Street? What did 09-09-09 mean for the markets? For those of you keeping track, 09-09-09 marks the six-month anniversary of the March 9 stock market bottom.

While most traders were hoping the markets had bottomed in late November, the markets rallied until February, when they fell off the table, blowing through the November bottom to trough on March 9.

The markets have come a long way. Since March 9, the blue-chip Dow is up 45%, the broader S&P 500 is up 51%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq is up 61%. Unfortunately, there is no market wide barometer targeting penny stock growth.

That said, since the beginning of 2009, PeterLeeds.com has seen their bi-weekly picks outpace the markets. January’s picks are up an average 113%, February up 60%, March gained 98%, and April’s average increase is 89%.

Given the difficult market environment for all investments, penny stocks included, I expect further gains from penny stocks as their business models play out. An overall economic recovery will help penny stocks even further. At least those that are fundamentally sound, I can’t speak for those penny stocks living off bloated press releases and pure speculation.

The question now is…where do we go next? Most traders believe that if you have been sitting on the sidelines and waiting to get into the market, it’s too late now. Unless, of course, you think stocks are going to rise another 50% in the next six months.

This recent six-month surge has been a payoff for penny stock investors who stayed in the market on the way down, buying more stocks as they became more and more attractive.

Six months out, the Dow now sits at about 9,500, well off its October 2007 high of 14,000. Many think it will take a long time to get back to those levels because they were driven by highly leveraged earnings. Meaning, as one article noted, the big investment banks pushed revenues and profits higher by running balance sheets with debt-to-equity ratios of 30 to 1 or higher.

Prior to this financial bubble, a 10-to-1 ratio was considered high. And, going forward, it probably will be again, which means the climb back up to Dow 14,000 will, according to this view, be shallow, not steep.

And, as we head into the autumn, it’s important to remember that, historically, September is the worst trading month of the year. The current climate probably means most penny stock investors are not going to be rewarded with a 50% or 60% broader gain over the next few months.

Having said that, there’s no shame in enjoying a nice, slow, steady rise in your penny stock portfolio either.
