Transition from guitar to piano?
I’ve been playing jazz guitar for quite a long time and really want to get decent on the piano, since I think piano is the most beautiful sounding instrument in the world…
How hard is the transition? Is it like starting from square one? Do skills carry over at all? I can already read sheet music, improvise, recognize all intervals and chords by ear, know alot of music theory and my teacher always uses the piano keyboard to help visualize theory…
I’m 16 years old, which I know is a bit old to start playing a new instrument…
Thanks and excuse my English!
Some skills carry over. The knowledge you already have will help you greatly.
The real tricky part is separating your hands. Playing guitar, (and since you play jazz guitar this will make more sense to you, I think, than other guitarists) only one hand is responsible for playing both the lead and the bass line. Your picking hand simply chooses which notes to strike that your fretting hand holds. With piano, both hands play the role that was formerly held by just one hand.
That being said, although it will take some time to get used to, it shouldn’t be a very hard transition.
And by the way, your English is just fine, except it’s not necessary to use an ellipsis (…) to trail off at the end of each paragraph… That’s just for uh… when you want to, uh… indicate a pause. Good luck in your musical endeavors.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical $5.64 A musical setting for Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a natural, and this holiday TV-movie (based on the Broadway version) generously crams music into its quick spin through the venerable story. Kelsey Grammer uses his musical pipes (and some of his “master thespian” style of acting) as Ebenezer Scrooge, the man whose miserliness needs no introduction here. There’s some experienced musical-c… |
