SHEET MUSIC STANDARDS
dividing parts in sheet music?

when one part is required to be split in two (for example the flute section may divide to play in parallel thirds or the violin two might be split in half for a view bars to give one more note for the chord) What do I write on sheet music? I’ve played from music with stems up and stems down before, but I wouldn’t know what to write on the score. I think I’ve seen “divis.” before, but I wouldn’t know how to indicate when the direction should stop i.e. when they are no longer needed to be in two parts.. Anyone know what standard practice is?

much appreciated.

My answer applies to chorus, where there’s frequently part-splitting, and the rules may not apply the same way.

Basically, you just jump to two staffs, labeling one section “soprano” and one “alto” (or whatever parts you desire). Keep them together with brackets to show they’re the same instrument, and when you jump back to one staff, just write “unis.” for unison above it.

This shows the division: http://g.sheetmusicplus.com/Look-Inside/large/822406_01.jpg

Willie Nelson has never been one to do the safe or expected, and this Booker T. Jones-produced album of pop standards from the ’30s and ’40s certainly fits the profile. It’s also one of the better albums of Nelson’s career, allowing Willie to dip his fragile, quivering tenor all around the beat in songs like “All of Me” and “Unchained Melody.” Jones’s organ, piano, and string arrangements are low-…

Stardust… The Great American Songbook, Vol. III

It’s a little hard to take Rod Stewart seriously when, on the first track of this third installment in his Great American Songbook series, he sings ruefully about his love life being “lean” (”Embraceable You”). But otherwise, Stardust…Volume III is as note-for-note solid as its predecessors–a cozy-up-to-the-fire treat that’s also a pleasant reminder of these songs’ staying power. “S’Wonderful” …

Keith Jarrett – Tokyo Solo

It’s no bulletin that improvisation is perhaps the central component of jazz, or that Keith Jarrett, a master jazz pianist, is also a gifted improviser. Yet what Jarrett plays in the course of Tokyo Solo, a 2002 performance that was his 150th concert in Japan, could hardly be called jazz, at least not according to most accepted criteria; the music heard here is, as Duke Ellington once said, “beyon…
