Do I have to learn the scales and other technicalities in music to be a really good guitar and keyboard player
I mean, such things as pentatonic minor and phrygian stuffs.
I could play rock songs and some metal with the guitar but I’m not very familiar with scales, etc….
I know some terms.
I can read music sheets in an average speed and play them as well.
Are they essential?
Sorry for some ignorance. LOL!!
I didn’t took any lessons.(just self-taught)
Many would say that knowledge in music theory is essential. There are many guitarists out there that can only play maybe one or two scales.
A conflicting point of view is that knowledge of these scales, keys and modes will cause one to think too technically rather than just writing or playing what they feel.
From a composition prespective, I personally would say that knowing your scales and key signatures are necessary. Once you know what key any given song is in, you can begin to learn the chords by ear and learn all of the parts by ear. Many people (including myself) are able to listen to a song and completely figure it out in their head before ever sitting down to learn it, given that it isn’t too complex and every part can easily be heard. Minor pentatonic scales are essential to MANY rock guitar leads and solos. If you learn any scale, learn this one.
Modes (you mentioned Phrygian; there are many modes out there) are not terribly important for the basic musician. Metal bands may use phrygian or locrian modes among others, whereas rock and blues bands might use mixolydian or dorian modes, but they are all based off the same scale structure.
The bottom line: at least learn your major key signatures and their relative minor signatures. then learn their respective scales. If this is all gibberish to you, speak to a music instructor or a local guitar teacher. You can even try to read up a bit on Wikipedia or something.
