Can authorities see what you download?
I feel stupid asking this question, but can authorities (i.e. police) see what you are downloading onto your computer? For example, if you downloaded free sheet music online, is there any possible way they would be able to see you did so and locate your IP?
Yes.
If someone wanted to, they could subpoena what you are doing on the Internet. It is not hard to do.
If you work at a large business, and know someone within INformation Assurance, you should ask them what they can see going out their POP (Point of Presense) Router.
For example. Child Porn… The FBI knows which sites contain it. They can then watch which people GO to these illegal sites. Afterwich, they monitor what these people do for other illegal activity and make sure they didnt just get there by mistake.
Everything you surf is stored in multiple locations. Locally on your computer (in like 2 or 3), by your ISP, by other routers that you surfed thru to get to your destination. All of these have the capability of logging what you do (legally or illegally). Any time your on a site that is HTTP, I would have the ability to read EVERY bit of information you surf or email!
